Malbikunarstöðin Hlaðbær - Colas hf. was founded in January 1987. The founders were Byggingarfélagið hf. with 51% share and the Danish company Colas Vejmateriale A/S with 49%. Colas Vejmateriale (later Colas Denmark) was then owned by A/S Dansk Shell. Colas Denmark A/S (http://www.colas.dk) is today the owner of Hlaðbær-Colas hf. Colas Denmark is now owned by Colas SA in France (http://www.colas.com). The Colas group has companies all around the world and is the biggest asphalt-group in the world today.

Byggingarfélagið hf. bought in 1986 the company Hlaðbær hf. that was a contractor with earth work and asphalt paving as its main purpose. Hlaðbær had for many years been doing works for the Road Administration and local municipalities in Iceland. The employees of Hlaðbæjar, many of which are still working in Hlaðbær-Colas hf., had experience and know-how in doing asphalt paving in Iceland. Colas Denmark came with over 50 years experience in asphalt production and paving and together with Hlaðbær founded a solid base for Hlaðbær-Colas hf., and its operations in Iceland. Colas Denmark is now the second largest company in Denmark in its field.

In march 1987 Hlaðbær-Colas started its asphalt operation with its asphalt plant and office in a new industry area in Hafnarfjörður. Hlaðbær-Colas hf. had bought a well modernised Barber-Greene asphalt plant from Sweden with a capacity of 90 tons per hour. In connection with the plant Hlaðbær-Colas runs a laboratory with suitable equipment for quality control.

In 1996 Hlaðbær-Colas hf. bought a mobile asphalt plant ERMONT TCM 17 with modern dust collector and capacity ranging from 70 to 120 tons pr hour. This plant was bought in connection with asphalt work in Vestfjarðar-tunnel. Later the plant has been used for asphalt work in Hvalfjörður-tunnel and connecting roads north of the tunnel. A small laboratory is used for quality control for the mobile plant.

The companies within the Colas-group, have made a cooperation agreement that involves, among other things, technical, administrative and financial backing to each other. This agreement gives Hlaðbær-Colas the strength to fulfil all technical and financial obligations in all asphalt and bitumen related works of all sizes.
